Senate Approves Establishment of Federal Medical Centre for Oleh

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Oleh, Delta State.

Sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas representing Delta South, the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023 (SB. 197) marks a significant step in expanding federal healthcare infrastructure in the Isoko region.

First introduced in November 2023, the legislation passed its third reading on Wednesday, May 21. It now moves to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo hailed the move as a “major turnaround” for a region long underserved in healthcare. He said the centre would ease access to specialist care, reduce travel for treatment, and help prevent avoidable deaths.

The facility is expected to boost public health, attract medical professionals, and create jobs. The senator thanked Senate leadership for their support and pledged to ensure the project’s full implementation.

“The presence of a Federal Medical Centre in Oleh will enhance the overall healthcare delivery system and also stimulate socio-economic growth through the creation of direct and indirect employment opportunities” he said.
