Delta Political Heavyweights Gather as Assembly Marks Third Anniversary With Thanksgiving Service

Leading political figures, government officials, traditional rulers and religious leaders converged on Asaba on Sunday for a thanksgiving service marking the third anniversary of the 8th Delta State House of Assembly.

The event, held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Unity Model Parish, behind the Junior Staff Quarters in Asaba, was part of activities commemorating three years of the current Assembly led by Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor, and Deputy Speaker, Arthur Akpowowo. The anniversary thanksgiving had earlier been announced by the Assembly as part of its programme to reflect on its legislative journey since inauguration in June 2023.

Among those in attendance were Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, accompanied by his wife, Tobore Oborevwori; former governor James Ibori; immediate past governor and Delta North APC senatorial candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa; former deputy governor Kingsley Otuaro; members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, clerics and other prominent stakeholders from across the state.

Also present were Managing Director of Tantita Security Services, High Chief Kestin Pondi; DESOPADEC Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor; and Secretary to the State Government, Sir Kingsley Emu, among other dignitaries.

The gathering provided an opportunity for political leaders and lawmakers to reflect on the Assembly’s activities over the past three years, a period during which the legislature has highlighted its role in lawmaking, oversight and representation. Recent reports from the Assembly indicate that several bills have been considered and key financial measures approved during the current legislative session.

Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori made a remark that quickly drew attention from attendees. Responding to commendations over his administration’s performance, the governor reportedly said that those praising him for what they consider good governance should also acknowledge the political platform under which he currently serves.

The thanksgiving service drew a cross-section of political actors from different backgrounds, underscoring the continuing realignments and evolving alliances shaping Delta State’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
