Retired Major General Dies In Bandits Captivity

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, calling the incident a tragic loss to the state and the country.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu.

According to the government, the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.

The statement noted that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, made sustained efforts to secure his freedom. However, those efforts did not result in his release before his death.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said. “Despite the relentless efforts of the state government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in tragedy.”

The government stated that the late General’s abduction and death represent a major loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, given his years of service to the nation.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda said the incident marks a dark moment and highlights the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated measures to address insecurity.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting security operations aimed at ending banditry in the state.

The governor also pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Our resolve to eliminate banditry and guarantee the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
