Bills Aim to Boost Development in Ethiope Federal Constituency Passes First Reading

Two bills aimed at enhancing education and professional training in Delta State’s Ethiope Federal Constituency have passed their first reading in the House of Representatives.

The proposed legislation the Nigerian Customs Training College, Oghara (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB.2316), and the Nigerian Paramedic College, Isiokolo (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB.2317) was sponsored by the member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, Honourable Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu on Wednesday, May 14.

If enacted, the Customs Training College in Oghara would be the first of its kind in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone. At present, only two such colleges operate in the country, located in Lagos and Kano.

Constituents argue that the new institutions would increase access to specialised training while generating economic and social benefits for the local communities.

However, while the initiative has been widely commended, some observers have expressed concern over the proliferation of federal institutions in Delta State amid what they describe as inadequate funding for existing ones.

“It is not just enough to establish educational facilities, we should start dragging both foreign and private industries to our dear State” commented a social media user.

Both bills will proceed to second reading as part of the legislative process in the coming months before they can be passed into law.
