Rotary Club Empowers People With Disabilities in Warri
The Rotary Club of Ubeji, District 9141, has launched a skills acquisition program aimed at empowering residents of Delta State, including people with disabilities (PWDs). The initiative, which ran for two weeks at the Bertrand Skill Acquisition Center, provided free training in five different skills, with 54 participants successfully graduating from the program on December 7.

Rtn. Emmanuel Etsano, President of the Rotary Club of Ubeji, explained that the program’s primary goal is to unlock entrepreneurial opportunities and reduce poverty within the community. He acknowledged that despite being free, participation was lower than expected due to the club’s strict selection process. Unlike popular programs where starter packs were given to participants, the club intentionally did not provide these items to avoid misuse, as some beneficiaries had previously sold them.
Participants in this program were selected based on their passion and interest, with the club committing to offering future support.

Etsano encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the knowledge and skills acquired for commercial and domestic purposes.
Mrs. Jane Orhewere, Lead Facilitator and Founder of the Bertrand Skill Acquisition Center, expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club for the opportunity to help individuals transform their lives through skills training. She also highlighted the novelty of training people with disabilities through Rotary, praising the participants’ resilience and determination.

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to the graduates, many of whom expressed their appreciation to the Rotary Club for promoting inclusivity in its initiatives and encouraged the organization to continue offering such opportunities to marginalized groups.
