Nigeria Joins the World in Marking Int’l Human Rights Day

Today, December 10th, marks the global observance of World Human Rights Day, with countries around the world stressing the importance of human dignity, equality, and justice. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” focuses on the urgent need for societies to uphold and protect the rights of all individuals, especially those marginalized or oppressed.

Governments, human rights organizations, and activists have used the occasion to renew calls for the enforcement of fundamental freedoms, the elimination of discrimination, and the promotion of social justice.

In a statement, the United Nations urged global leaders to prioritize human rights in their policies and practices, emphasizing that the protection of rights is crucial for the stability and progress of nations. “Human rights are the foundation of peace and security, and we must work together to ensure that they are upheld for every person, everywhere,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

In Nigeria, activists are joining the global community in calling for increased efforts to tackle pressing issues such as gender equality, racial discrimination, freedom of expression, and the rights of refugees and displaced persons.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) launched a one-week National Legislative Forum on Human Rights in Abuja, as part of the country’s annual Human Rights Week. The forum spotlighted critical challenges and served as a call to action, offering a platform for shaping policies, strengthening advocacy, and amplifying the voices of the most vulnerable. Activists emphasized that significant progress is still needed, especially in regions where fundamental rights are denied or violated.
