NCAA Bans Use of Flight Mode, Orders Phones Off in Flights

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed that all mobile phones and electronic devices must be completely switched off during take-off and landing on Nigerian airlines. The directive, announced at the National Civil Aviation Security Committee meeting in Abuja, ends the long-standing practice of using “flight mode.”

Director General of the NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, said the new rule is part of efforts to strengthen safety and eliminate risks linked to non-compliance with aviation protocols. He confirmed that airlines are required to amend their operations manuals to reflect the change and submit them for approval.

The Authority also unveiled tougher measures to curb unruly passenger behaviour at airports. These include compulsory conflict resolution training for airline staff and nationwide public awareness campaigns through radio and television to educate travelers on their responsibilities.

To further test preparedness, the NCAA announced that mock response exercises will be conducted next week in Lagos and Abuja. The aviation regulator stressed that the sector is entering a “new beginning,” where violations by passengers or operators will no longer be tolerated.
