JAMB Flags Over 9,000 Illegal Admissions in Nigerian Institutions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has identified at least 9,469 fake admissions across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2024 academic year.

According to JAMB, these admissions were conducted outside its Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), a platform designed to ensure merit-based, transparent student placements.

Kano State University of Science and Technology recorded the highest number of irregular entries, with 2,215 fake admissions, followed by Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with 1,215. Other institutions involved include Gombe State University (1,164), Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (761), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (534).

The board reiterated that any admission done outside CAPS is illegal and warned that such candidates are ineligible for participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed this policy at the 2025 JAMB policy meeting in Abuja. He warned that institutions and individuals engaging in such practices would face prosecution and sanctions.

CAPS was introduced to improve fairness and efficiency in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions, giving applicants the ability to track offers and verify admission status online. JAMB has repeatedly cautioned institutions against bypassing the platform through backdoor admissions.
