Edo Court Jails Seven, Including Disabled Woman, for Drug Offences

A Federal High Court in Benin City has sentenced seven individuals, including a physically-challenged woman, to a total of 93 years in prison for drug-related offences. The convictions, secured in July 2025, stem from various cases involving cannabis, methamphetamine, and other banned substances.

Among those sentenced was Rita Idehen from Oredo LGA, who received 15 years or a N3 million fine for possession of cannabis and other drugs. Risikatu Tijani from Osun State was sentenced to 17 years or a N4 million fine. Others convicted include Friday Robert, Etimesy Stephen, Salami Philip Timothy, and Christopher Tanko, each receiving 15-year sentences.

The NDLEA stated that physical disability is no defence in criminal cases and emphasized that the rulings serve as a strong deterrent. Over 100 drug-related cases remain pending in Edo State, reflecting the ongoing fight against narcotics in the region.
