Dozens Freed After Katsina Villagers Detain Bandits’ Relatives

Dozens of residents kidnapped by armed bandits in Katsina State have been released after villagers reportedly seized relatives of the attackers and used them as leverage during tense negotiations.

Local sources say the kidnappers abducted the residents in recent days and demanded ransoms running into more than ₦3 billion. In response, vigilantes and community members identified and captured the parents and siblings of some of the bandits, warning that they would not be released unless the abducted villagers were freed.

According to an unverified video circulating locally, the standoff lasted two to three days before the bandits agreed to release all captives. The victims were not only freed unharmed but were each allegedly given ₦30,000 by the bandits to return home. Following their release, the villagers also freed the detained relatives of the attackers.

The incident highlights the persistent insecurity in Katsina State, where repeated kidnappings and armed attacks have forced communities to adopt increasingly desperate self-defence measures. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the latest development.
