Paystack Fires Co-Founder Ezra Olubi Amid Misconduct Allegations

Ezra Olubi, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Paystack, says he was removed from his position without being given the chance to defend himself. In a blog post published on Saturday, November 23, 2025, Olubi stated that Paystack terminated his employment even though the company’s investigation into allegations against him had not yet concluded.

The dismissal follows a wave of online backlash that erupted in mid-November, when a social media user accused Olubi of abusive behaviour. The post triggered the resurfacing of explicit tweets he wrote between 2009 and 2013, sparking wider criticism and prompting Paystack to suspend him while announcing plans for an independent investigation.

Olubi insists the termination breached the terms of his suspension and contradicted Paystack’s internal policies, saying he was never called for a meeting or offered a chance to respond. He confirmed that his legal team is now reviewing the company’s actions and determining next steps, adding that he will refrain from further public comment until then.

The situation has renewed scrutiny of workplace governance in Africa’s fast-growing tech industry, where recent misconduct scandals have pushed companies to reassess their culture and accountability systems. Paystack acquired by Stripe in 2020 has not issued a new statement since Olubi’s post, and Stripe has also remained silent. Efforts to obtain comment from Paystack were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
