Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura with Full State Honours
Former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has been laid to rest at his family residence in Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and a host of dignitaries from across Africa.
The late President’s remains arrived from London on Tuesday afternoon via Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina. From there, they were conveyed in a motorcade led by President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and visiting leaders including Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, and former Nigerien President Issoufou Mahamadou.
Also present were former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, top government officials, and captains of industry, all paying their final respects to the retired general who twice led Nigeria – first as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected president.
Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Daura as the convoy made its way to the former president’s home, where a brief lying-in-state was held. The funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah), led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Imam of Daura’s Central Mosque, preceded the interment.
At exactly 5:50 p.m., Buhari was laid to rest in the presence of close family members and national leaders. The Nigerian Armed Forces rendered full military honours, including a 21-gun salute and a reveille, honoring the burial of one of the nation’s most prominent figures.
The state funeral continues with a series of condolence events in Daura, including a scheduled visit to the family by the Presidential Committee later on Tuesday.
