74% of Inmates Now Enrolled in National ID Database -NCoS
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that the majority of inmates across the country have been registered into the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) database.
As of June 7, 2025, approximately 74% of the nation’s 80,879 inmates—59,786 individuals—have been successfully enrolled, the Service said in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar.
The NCoS emphasized that the registration exercise, carried out in partnership with NIMC, is ongoing and that mechanisms are in place to complete the process for remaining inmates.
This comes after media reports claimed the registration exercise had not started in all custodial centres nationwide.
The NCoS’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, dismissed the reports as ‘misleading and said the registration process was ongoing.
Abubakar stressed the importance of inmate inclusion in national data systems as part of efforts toward rehabilitation, reintegration, and digital inclusion.
The Service urged media outlets to verify facts with relevant authorities before publication to avoid misinformation.
