Warri Billionaire Onuwaje Honored for Excellence in Crude Oil Pipeline Protection
In a region long plagued by crude oil theft and environmental degradation, one Warri-based company is changing the narrative and earning national recognition.
Emirate Logistics Ltd, under the leadership of Chairman Benson Onuwaje, has been awarded Oil Security and Environmentally Friendly Company of the Year by the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of over 130 NGOs, civil rights groups, and community-based organizations. The award recognizes the company’s exemplary work in safeguarding critical oil infrastructure and empowering host communities across the Niger Delta.

The NHRC praised Onuwaje’s efforts as a beacon of integrity and justice, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to giving voice to the voiceless and shield to the oppressed. Onuwaje’s work, they said, exemplifies the kind of private-sector leadership essential for sustainable development in oil-producing regions.

In his acceptance speech on April 16, Onuwaje, who hails from Omadino Community, in Warri South Local Government Area, recounted the early days of his company’s involvement in securing the Escravos crude oil pipeline, particularly during the era of the Niger Delta Avengers. While other installations were vulnerable, Emirate Logistics successfully protected the Escravos line from sabotage, a feat acknowledged by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which rewarded six of its collaborating staff with double promotions.

This success led to further assignments, including the protection and cleanup of the OML-40, 16-inch oil pipeline stretching from Opuama to Otumara Flow Station. The project engaged over 180 workers and 70 women from local communities, the women serving as vital sources against illegal bunkering activities.
“The scale of illegal refineries we dismantled was overwhelming, more than 240 in that area alone,” Onuwaje said.
The company’s efforts extended to the Trans-Forcados Pipeline, a vital artery in Nigeria’s crude oil distribution network. Within three weeks of deployment, Emirate Logistics had reclaimed the line from oil thieves, prompting Shell to issue a commendation and request pressure reduction due to the restored full-capacity flow, something not seen in over 30 years.

According to the Warri business mogul, this achievement played a direct role in Delta State regaining its position as Nigeria’s top oil-producing state.
Beyond Pipelines: Investing in People
Onuwaje’s vision goes far beyond oil security. Under his leadership, Emirate Logistics has heavily invested in human capital development. In Warri North Local Government Area alone, the company has donated electricity generators ranging from 100 to 250 KVA to 14 communities, helping to improve livelihoods and strengthen community relations.
Additionally, a recent community empowerment initiative saw 300 people receive deep freezers and generators, each recipient also going home with ₦200,000 to boost their small businesses.
A Model for Inclusive Development
Onuwaje believes that genuine community engagement is key to sustainable peace and production in the Niger Delta. “When the government says it wants to boost crude oil output, we support it , not just with security, but by ensuring the people also benefit,” he said.
The Warri billionaire concluded with gratitude to the award organizers and participants.
“It is me you see standing here, but behind me are hundreds of hardworking Nigerians who make this possible. As God sees us, He will see you too.”
