Ughelli Council Chair Faces Allegations of Extortion, ₦1.2m Bribe via Wife’s Firm

The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government in Delta State, Jaro Egbo, is facing corruption allegations following his dissolution of the Motor Parks Revenue Committee.

The committee’s chairman, Gowon Egoide, accused Egbo of demanding monthly kickbacks of ₦400,000 and claimed Egbo’s wife received a ₦1.2 million bribe.

Egoide described the move as politically motivated, alleging it was linked to a dispute over Uduere Youths leadership election.

Egbo announced the dissolution last week, citing poor financial transparency. The Non-Market Revenue Committee was also disbanded for similar reasons.

Receipts seen by SaharaReporters appear to show payments from Egoide to Egbo and his wife’s business, Viviaro Enterprises. The firm was registered in 2023 to an address linked to the council chairman.

Egoide denied any financial wrongdoing and accused Egbo of targeting him for refusing to support the chairman’s preferred candidate in Uduere’s youth leadership contest.

Although the council chairman has not formally responded to the allegations, in a terse statement via his facebook handle on Wednesday, May 14, he dismissed the claims, describing Egoide as ungrateful and illiterate.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has yet to comment on the matter.
