Two Feared Dead As IYC Election Turns Bloody
Gunmen have opened fire during the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) election in Abuloma, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, leaving two people feared dead.
The IYC Central Zone had rescheduled the election after an earlier postponement, but midway through the process, gunmen reportedly stormed the venue and fired indiscriminately.
Participants reportedly fled the scene, with eyewitness reports suggesting two individuals were hit by stray bullets. The election was immediately suspended.
Responding to the incident, the Rivers State Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko said the Command had launched a manhunt for the attackers, condemning the shooting as “senseless.” While Iringe-Koko did not confirm any casualties, she stated that tactical units were deployed to the scene by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu.
She also noted that investigations are ongoing as the police work to verify reports of fatalities.
