Tinubu Orders Pension Reforms, Free Healthcare for Retirees
President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to implement long-delayed pension increases and introduce a minimum pension guarantee for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The move follows nationwide protests by pensioners demanding improved welfare.
Tinubu also ordered the rapid rollout of a free healthcare initiative targeted at low-income retirees, describing it as a crucial aspect of social protection. In a meeting with PenCom Director General Omolola Oloworaran, the President emphasized the urgency of resolving the pension crisis, especially for the police force.
PenCom also briefed the President on efforts to safeguard pension funds amid economic pressures and plans to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute in foreign currency. Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to pension reform and inclusive economic policies.
