Teen Dies After Overdosing on Dexamethasone; Friend Arrested

A 15-year-old boy, Gift Oberhirhi, has died in Delta State after taking an overdose of Dexamethasone tablets. Reports indicate he ingested about 15 tablets, obtained from a friend, Destiny Akpofure, also 15, without medical supervision.

The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the victim took the tablets to gain weight and increase appetite. He fell ill soon after and passed away four days later.

Police revealed that the suspect allegedly discouraged Gift from informing anyone about taking the medication before his condition deteriorated. Destiny Akpofure has been arrested and is in police custody as investigations continue.

Dexamethasone is not classified as a controlled drug. Authorities warn that unsupervised use of medications poses serious risks and underscores growing concerns over substance misuse among teenagers.
