Alleged Consensus Candidate Sparks Tension in Ughelli South APC
Fresh tension is brewing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ughelli South Constituency of Delta State over allegations that a candidate has been imposed ahead of the 2027 Delta State House of Assembly election. Party members and constituents have rejected the move, saying the process does not reflect the will of the people.
Sources within the constituency say a small group of party leaders selected a preferred aspirant and presented him as a consensus candidate, sidelining others in the race. Some constituents have also called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to caution his Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, known as Temple, over claims that the governor’s name is being used to push the arrangement.
A constituent, Kevwe, insisted that there is no consensus in Ughelli South and urged that all aspirants be allowed to face party members. According to him, anyone presenting the arrangement as a consensus is acting against democratic principles.
Meanwhile, Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, has dismissed reports that the APC has produced a consensus candidate in the constituency. Izeze, who represented Ughelli South in the State House of Assembly between 2015 and 2023, urged party members to ignore the claims and allow aspirants pursue their ambitions through transparent and lawful democratic processes.
