Team Itsekiri Wins Delta State Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup
The Delta State Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday as Team Itsekiri (Ugbomarun FC) emerged champions, defeating Ndokwa East United 3-1 in a highly competitive final match held at Baptist High School Field, Orerokpe Town.
The match started with both teams applying early pressure, but it was Team Itsekiri that drew first blood in the 25th minute, courtesy of a spectacular goal from their striker, Ekpeto Udubosi. Ndokwa East United responded shortly before halftime, leveling the score with a penalty kick converted by their captain, Okoro Blessing.
In the second half, Team Itsekiri regained control. Omatseye Eriyo put them ahead again in the 60th minute, and Ebiwei Gbenedio sealed the win with a goal in the 80th minute. Ndokwa East United fought hard but couldn’t catch up, giving Team Itsekiri a well-deserved victory.
Meanwhile, Team Urhobo (Udu United FC) claimed third place after Team Isoko (Winsome FC) failed to show up for their match, awarding Urhobo a walkover victory.
The tournament, which brought together various ethnic groups from across Delta State, aimed to foster unity, peaceful coexistence, and cultural understanding.
Team Itsekiri’s victory earned them a cash prize of ₦2 million, a trophy, and gold medals. Ndokwa East United received ₦1.5 million and silver medals, while Team Urhobo took home ₦1 million and bronze medals. Ekpeto Udubosi was recognized with the Most Valuable Goalkeeper award for his stellar performances.
Comrade Mulade Sheriff, the National Coordinator of CEPEJ and organizer of the event, commended the teams for their sportsmanship and noted that the tournament had successfully promoted ethnic harmony. “This event has strengthened our bond and highlighted the cultural richness of Delta State,” he said.
Also, Team Isoko (Winsome FC) was disqualified and banned from participating in future editions due to their failure to appear for the match.
