Switch Off Lights, Tinubu Tells Nigerians Amid Rising Cost
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to adopt energy-saving habits, such as switching off lights when not in use, to help manage their electricity bills. The President made the comments on Monday during a conversation with reporters at his Lagos residence in the high-end Bourdillon area of Ikoyi.
In his statement, Tinubu noted that learning to manage electricity consumption was not a negative approach. “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage,” he said.
His statement come amid a steep rise in energy costs since his inauguration in May 2023, particularly following the removal of the fuel subsidy and electricity tariff increases. Petrol prices have surged from under N200 per litre to more than N1,100 in some parts of the country, while electricity tariffs have also escalated, putting a strain on Nigerian households.
Despite the economic pressure, Tinubu reiterated his opposition to price control measures, a policy that has been suggested by some as a way to curb inflation. “I don’t believe in price control, we will work hard to supply the market,” he added, stressing that his administration’s focus would be on improving energy supply.
