Supreme Court Removes Julius Abure as Labour Party Chairman
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party in a unanimous ruling on Friday.
A five-member panel of the court set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had earlier recognised Abure’s leadership of the party. The apex court ruled that the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to make such a declaration, stating that the case concerned the internal affairs of the Labour Party, which fall outside the judiciary’s remit.
The court stated that issues relating to party leadership should be resolved internally, with no involvement from the judiciary. The Supreme Court also upheld an appeal filed by Senator Esther Usman and another party member, deeming it meritorious.
Also, the court noted that Abure’s tenure had already expired, leading to the dismissal of a cross-appeal filed by his faction within the party.
