SSANU, NASU Commences Indefinite Strike Over Withheld Salaries

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike, demanding the immediate release of four months’ withheld salaries.

In a joint statement issued by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi on Sunday, October 27, the unions expressed their frustration, stating it is “appalling” that repeated ultimatums to the government have gone unheeded.

The strike follows a three-week ultimatum given to the Federal Government on September 17, 2023, in which the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU warned that failure to address the outstanding salaries would lead to industrial action.

This latest strike is not the unions’ first protest against the government’s failure to pay salaries their eight months’ withheld salaries.
