Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan denied entry to Assembly Complex

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been stopped from entering the National Assembly complex in Abuja, despite a recent court order reinstating her to the Senate.

Her vehicle arrived at the complex shortly at around 12:20pm, but was turned back by security personnel stationed at the gate. The senator, accompanied by activist Aisha Yusufu, civil society organiser Randy Peters, and others, then proceeded to walk towards the assembly building.

It is not yet clear whether they have been granted access on foot.

A Federal High Court recently ruled that Akpoti-Uduaghan who represents Kogi Central should be reinstated to the Senate, following what it said was an unlawful removal. The court also instructed the senator to issue an apology to the upper chamber.

However, the Senate’s media spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, has said there is no legal directive compelling her immediate return, and that parliamentary procedures must be followed.

Ms Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters argue that the delay in implementing the court order undermines the judiciary and raises questions about democratic accountability.

There has been no official response yet from the leadership of the Senate following today’s events.
