Senate Summons Aviation Minister Over Rising Airfares
The Nigerian Senate has raised concerns over rising domestic airfares and summoned Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo along with major industry stakeholders for urgent explanations. Lawmakers warned that sudden increases in ticket prices on local routes are adding pressure on citizens already facing high living costs.
Senators noted that air travel, once a reliable alternative to Nigeria’s poor road network, is becoming unaffordable for many. They cautioned that unchecked fare hikes could hinder mobility, disrupt business activities, and slow economic recovery.
The hearing will examine potential solutions, including fare regulation, improved competition, and government support to stabilise the aviation sector. Public complaints have increased, particularly during peak travel periods, as some routes recorded steep price jumps within days.
The Senate expects actionable responses from aviation authorities and industry players, signalling possible legislative measures if pricing abuses continue in the domestic market.
