Senate Refutes Social Media Claims on New State Creation
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly dismissed circulating social media rumours claiming that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio clarified that although the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals for state creation, none have progressed through the full legislative process required for approval.
He emphasized the rigorous and complex nature of the state creation process, assuring Nigerians that no new state has been officially sanctioned by the Senate. Akpabio warned communities and interest groups against organising meetings or mobilising around proposals that have yet to meet legal requirements.
He urged the public to rely solely on official National Assembly communications regarding constitutional amendments and related matters, cautioning against misinformation.
