Delta State Approves New Electricity Market to Boost Power Supply
The Delta State Government has approved the establishment of its own electricity market to improve power generation, distribution, and regulation across the state. The state executive council adopted a mini-grid system model, allowing independent operators to provide end-to-end electricity services within designated zones.
This follows a 2023 constitutional amendment that removed restrictions preventing states from managing electricity in areas covered by the national grid. The state plans to encourage various energy sources, including gas, solar, and hydro, with infrastructure rollout privately funded.
The Delta State Electricity Commission will oversee regulation, licensing, and dispute resolution, supported by new bodies managing distribution and market supply. A Rural Electrification Agency will also target underserved communities. Delta joins at least 11 other states with similar electricity regulatory autonomy.
