Rivers Assembly Insists on Governor Fubara’s Impeachment
The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its resolve to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, despite growing calls for restraint.
Lawmakers made their position known while addressing journalists after the Assembly failed to reconvene as scheduled. They maintained that impeachment remains the appropriate response to the political deadlock in the state.
The process was triggered by allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and unauthorized expenditure of public funds. The House had earlier adjourned after initiating the proceedings.
However, two lawmakers have appealed for a rethink, urging dialogue and reconciliation. They cited appeals from elders and stakeholders, warning that impeachment could further inflame tensions in the state.
