Power Sector Corruption Behind Grid Collapses, Says EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has blamed the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national grid on the use of substandard electrical materials supplied by corrupt contractors in the power sector. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed this during a visit by the House Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC initiated a probe into the power sector and found alarming practices that he said would “make Nigerians shed tears.” According to the EFCC Chairman, contractors awarded projects to supply electrical equipment have often cut corners by using substandard materials, a practice that has contributed significantly to equipment breakdowns, power outages, and grid collapses.
He stated that the Commission is committed to addressing corruption within the power sector and holding responsible parties accountable. The revelation has sparked concern among Nigerians, as the country continues to grapple with frequent power disruptions and infrastructure challenges in the energy sector.
