Police Probe Assault on Teenager in Bayelsa State

The Bayelsa State Police Command has begun a manhunt for four young women accused of indecent assault, attempted murder, cyberbullying, and related offences following a viral incident involving 19-year-old Nancy Wilfred.

The incident took place on 29 August in Yenagoa, where the victim, originally from Delta State, was allegedly lured by acquaintances and assaulted. She later shared details of the attack on social media, claiming she was beaten, stripped, and filmed while being threatened. Despite one suspect being arrested, reports suggest she was released, prompting public outrage.

In response, the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed it has launched a criminal investigation and appealed to the public for information. Officials have also urged people to stop circulating the video, citing concerns about the victim’s mental health. A reward of ₦2 million has been offered for information leading to the suspects’ arrest.

Women’s rights groups, journalists’ associations, and state officials have all condemned the incident and called for swift action. The case has reignited debate about gender-based violence and the need for stronger protections for young women in Nigeria.
