Oborevwori Releases ₦8.4bn to Clear 13-Year DESOPADEC Debt

Delta State has taken steps to close a major backlog of unpaid project debts as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved ₦8.4 billion for DESOPADEC to offset liabilities accumulated between 2010 and 2023. The payment is expected to restore confidence among contractors and revive stalled community projects.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Communication, Charles Aniagwu, said contractors owed ₦20 million and below would receive full payment, while larger debts would be settled in phases. He noted that this followed a detailed audit ordered by the Governor to verify all claims.

Aniagwu linked the intervention to the Governor’s push to confront inherited obligations, citing similar moves such as the release of ₦10 billion to the State Pension Bureau and earlier clearance of promotion arrears.

DESOPADEC Managing Director Festus Ochonogor welcomed the approval, saying it would help complete road, water, school, jetty, and other grassroots projects stalled for years in oil-producing communities.
