Delta Chief Judge Reviews 460 Awaiting-Trial Cases in Warri, Sapele
The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Theresa Diai, has carried out a major review of 460 cases involving awaiting-trial inmates at the state’s custodial centres, part of efforts to ensure lawful detention and reduce congestion. The exercise covered 313 cases in Warri and 147 in Sapele.
Justice Diai told officials during her visit that the review was aimed at strengthening fairness and preventing illegal detention, rather than granting mass releases. She explained that once cases are already before a court, her role is limited to ensuring speedy and proper hearings. The review will continue in Agbor, Kwale, and Ogwashi-Uku in the coming weeks.
She urged justice sector officials to fully adopt the Virtual Court Hearing System being deployed across high courts and custodial facilities to reduce delays and improve case management.
Correctional officers in Warri and Sapele welcomed the engagement but pointed to rising numbers of young inmates and challenges surrounding fines in some courts. They also appealed for more manpower and resources, warning that overcrowding continues to strain daily operations.
