Obi Confirms 2027 Run, Vows Single Term, Rejects Merger with Atiku
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during a live interactive session on X Spaces on Sunday night, Obi said he would serve a single four-year term if elected, adding that his focus would be to stabilise the country within two years. A statement released Monday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, reiterated his commitment to national reform.
Obi ruled out a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar but said he is open to coalition talks provided they prioritise addressing the country’s insecurity, economic decline, and food crisis.
“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara… count me out,” he said.
On internal party affairs, Obi said the Labour Party is working towards securing INEC recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction, in line with a Supreme Court ruling.

Obi also criticised President Tinubu’s leadership style and domestic absence, reportedly referencing the President’s recent trip to St. Lucia. He promised a transparent and non-violent electoral approach in 2027, and outlined his first 100-day focus areas as security, education, and poverty reduction.
He vowed to end political defections by elected officials and reduce government spending, stating: “My past speaks for me. Leaders must be ready to risk their lives for the people.”
Obi, a former Anambra State governor finished third in the last election with over eight million votes. Known for his reform-driven message and appeal to young voters, he is now looking to build on that momentum as he positions himself as a credible alternative in 2027.
