No Final Decision Yet on Warri Ward Delineation –INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that it has concluded the delineation of electoral wards in the Warri Federal Constituency, following a Supreme Court directive issued in December 2022.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission said it was aware of what it described as “misleading narratives” surrounding the ongoing process in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Local Government Areas.
The electoral body confirmed that it began a series of consultations with stakeholders in February 2023, which continued until July 2024, followed by field assessments across the affected communities. A draft report was subsequently produced.
Further consultations were held on 4 April in Warri, during which stakeholders were presented with copies of the draft report. INEC says this was aimed at giving concerned parties an opportunity to voice concerns and work towards a mutually agreed outcome.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said: “Contrary to the speculations making the rounds, the Commission is yet to take a final decision on the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency.”
He urged all parties to submit their observations on the draft report, adding that this feedback would inform the next phase of deliberations.
The Commission also appealed for calm, calling on all sides to avoid actions that might threaten peace in the region.
“INEC will continue to operate based on fairness, equity, the rule of law, and in full consultation with all stakeholders,” Mr Olumekun added.
The Supreme Court ruling had directed INEC to revisit the delineation exercise in Warri following longstanding disputes over electoral boundaries in the area.
