Niger Delta Games Organisers Enforce Indigenous Athlete Rule
Organisers of the Niger Delta Games have warned participating states against fielding non-indigenous athletes at the competition scheduled to hold in Edo State from 20 to 27 February. The directive was issued in Benin City during a briefing with stakeholders.
Managing consultant of Dunamis-Icon Limited, Sir Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, said the rule is aimed at ending athlete poaching and promoting grassroots sports development across the nine Niger Delta states.
He noted that each state has enough local talent to compete successfully if properly nurtured, adding that strict verification measures will be enforced.
The organisers said the second edition of the games is expected to surpass the maiden event and further strengthen regional sports development.
