Monarchs Should Have Legal Powers to Ensure Local Peace -Ovie of Idjerhe

Traditional rulers in Nigeria have urged the federal government to grant monarchs constitutional responsibilities as a strategy to address rising insecurity across the country. Speaking at a recent gathering, HRM Udurhie, Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom and Publicity Secretary of the Urhobo Traditional Rulers Council, highlighted the crucial role monarchs play in maintaining peace at the grassroots level.

According to HRM Udurhie, traditional leaders are uniquely positioned to mediate local conflicts and ensure stability in communities. “Peace in local communities depends on the active involvement of traditional rulers,” he said, stressing that empowering monarchs could strengthen governance and enhance security nationwide.

The call comes amid growing concerns over insecurity across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, with traditional rulers advocating for formal recognition and defined roles in law enforcement, conflict resolution, and community development. They argue that constitutional backing would enable monarchs to contribute more effectively to national peace and stability.
