Mob Attacks Okpanam Police Headquarters, Leaving Officer Injured

About 500 hoodlums, predominantly from the north, attacked the Okpanam Divisional Headquarters in Delta State on March 19 at approximately 11:45 a.m. The assailants damaged patrol vehicles and injured Inspector Chinedu Ebago of the Crack Squad, who sustained a wound to the forehead.

The violence was reportedly triggered by the death of an accident victim, said to be a relative of the attackers, whom they alleged had not received adequate care after being taken to the Specialist Hospital Asaba by the police. During the incident, the victim’s body was brought to the police station, where extensive destruction was carried out.

Reinforcements later arrived, leading to the arrest of 10 male suspects, while others fled, abandoning 14 motorcycles and one tricycle that were recovered at the station. The case has been transferred to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for profiling and further investigation.
