Man Dies After He was Flogged for Raping a Minor in Bayelsa
A 47-year-old man named Emi died in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State after receiving strokes of the cane as punishment for the alleged rape of a ten-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the riverside settlement of Ekeowe, sparking chaos and intense debate over the conflict between traditional justice and modern law. Community sources stated that the man was caught sexually assaulting the minor in a nearby bush after she was ambushed while walking home from a farm with her aunt.
Under longstanding local tradition, the customary punishment for rape is severe: ten strokes of the cane from each of the community’s twelve families, totaling one hundred twenty lashes. While some community members reportedly offered money—amounts of fifty thousand naira and fifteen thousand naira—to spare the suspect, the wider community rejected the pleas, insisting that the full traditional penalty be enforced as a deterrent.
The flogging proved fatal, as the suspect collapsed and lost consciousness after enduring only forty strokes, one-third of the prescribed sentence. He was later confirmed dead on arrival at the community hospital. His death triggered immediate pandemonium, with enraged youths flooding the streets and prompting the deployment of armed soldiers from the Ogboinbiri base to restore order.
Local authorities have strongly condemned the mob action. The chief press secretary to the Southern Ijaw council chairman confirmed the incident and stated that while the council does not condone the alleged crime, the public flogging was unacceptable. He noted that the situation should have been reported to security agencies so the law could take its course. Normalcy has since returned to the community following intervention by a council delegation and security operatives.
Authorities confirmed that four persons have been arrested in connection with the death and are being held at the criminal investigatives department in Yenagoa. The victim’s body has been evacuated to the morgue at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. An official police response was not immediately available, as the public relations officer stated he had not yet received full details of the incident.
