Ijaw Youths Protest at INEC Headquarters Over Warri Constituency Delineation
Ijaw youths under the umbrella of Operation Rescue Ijaw Nation Crusaders (ORINC) on Monday staged a protest at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, calling on the electoral body to immediately enforce the Supreme Court judgment on the delineation report for the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State.
The demonstrators accused the Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC of allegedly failing to comply with the directive of the Supreme Court, insisting that the commission has continued to delay action on the matter despite the clear ruling of the apex court.
The group further alleged that certain powerful individuals in the country were influencing INEC against carrying out the judgment, claiming that such interference was obstructing the democratic process in the Warri Federal Constituency.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs at the entrance of the commission’s headquarters, the protesters questioned INEC’s readiness to conduct a credible and transparent election in 2027 if it could not promptly implement the court’s decision.
They stressed that the people of the area must not be denied their voting rights during the 2027 general elections, maintaining that the continued delay in implementing the judgment could create political unrest within the region.
The protesters also warned that rising tension across the Niger Delta could pose serious challenges during the 2027 elections if their demands were ignored, adding that they could not assure the safety of INEC officials in the region should the situation remain unresolved.
