Amad’s Late Strike Seals Ivory Coast Victory Over Ecuador

Amad Diallo struck in dramatic fashion deep into stoppage time as Ivory Coast claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia, taking a significant step towards the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Manchester United winger, surprisingly named among the substitutes, proved the difference-maker in the 90th minute. After a powerful burst forward from Wilfried Singo, Amad met the resulting pass with composure, opening his body to guide a left-footed finish into the bottom corner and spark wild celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

The late breakthrough not only secured a crucial three points for Ivory Coast but also ended Ecuador’s remarkable 19-match unbeaten run, which had lasted almost two years.

Returning to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years, the African champions showed resilience and determination against a disciplined Ecuador side that had built a reputation for defensive solidity under coach Sebastian Beccacece.

Ecuador came close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar in the first half, while veteran captain Enner Valencia saw a second-half effort rebound off the post from a tight angle. Despite creating dangerous openings, the South Americans were unable to find the clinical touch needed to convert their chances.

Ivory Coast also threatened, with Elye Wahi rattling the crossbar shortly after the restart. However, clear opportunities remained scarce in a tightly contested encounter, and Ecuador did not register a shot on target until the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into an important save.

For long periods, Ecuador’s well-organised defence appeared capable of containing Ivory Coast’s attacking threats, including highly rated forward Yan Diomande. Yet just as the match seemed destined for a goalless draw, Amad delivered a moment of quality to settle the contest.

The victory leaves Ivory Coast in a strong position in Group E, which also includes Germany and Curacao, and enhances their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history. For Ecuador, meanwhile, it was a painful defeat after a spirited performance that deserved more than the final scoreline reflected.
