Gunmen Attack Seminary in Edo, Abduct Rector Rev. Fr. Oyode

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has confirmed that gunmen, believed to be herdsmen, launched an attack on the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Agenebode, Edo State, on Sunday October 27, abducting its Rector, Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode.

Warri Sentinel learned the incident occurred around 7 p.m. during evening prayers when the attackers reportedly stormed the seminary and took Rev. Fr. Oyode into a nearby bush. A statement from the Diocese, signed by Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications, detailed the assault, emphasizing that no other seminarians were harmed.

In the statement, the Diocese urged for prayers for the Rector’s safe return, highlighting the seminary’s importance since its establishment by Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia in 2006, which has since trained over 500 priests.

The Vice Rector and remaining seminarians have been temporarily relocated to a secure area while authorities work to enhance security around the institution. There has been no communication with the kidnappers thus far.

Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 5, AIG Arungwa Nwazue, announced plans to visit Agenebode to oversee the investigation and assess the situation.
