Amaju Pinnick breaks silence on Tompolo’s visit to Warri

Former FIFA Council Member and former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has broken his silence following controversy surrounding the recent visit of ex-militant leader Government Ekpemuokpolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to Warri.

In an exclusive interview with Warri Sentinel, Pinnick confirmed that Tompolo visited Warri to see former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who is recovering from illness. He described the visit as personal and rooted in Tompolo’s long-standing respect for Uduaghan.

The visit, however, sparked criticism on social media, with some accusing Pinnick of betraying the interests of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality. The backlash comes amid mounting concerns over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) proposed ward delineation in the Warri Federal Constituency, an issue that has reignited fears of political marginalisation and unrest.

Pinnick dismissed these claims, reiterating that he has no financial or contractual ties to Tompolo and that their relationship remains rooted in mutual respect. He maintained that his loyalty to his community remains intact.

He also emphasised his responsibility as a national figure in addressing the growing tension. As a recipient of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), one of Nigeria’s highest national honours  and a native of Warri, Pinnick said it was incumbent upon him to advocate for peace and stability in the region. He added that the stability of Warri is not merely a local issue, but one with national implications.

“As a national figure and a title holder of the OFR, and more importantly, as someone who hails from Warri, it is my duty to speak up for peace,” he said.

He revealed that he has been in active communication with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Tompolo, and other key community stakeholders, advocating for dialogue and restraint to prevent the situation from deteriorating into another Warri crisis.

Pinnick noted that while federal authorities are already reviewing the matter  as confirmed by the state governor,  sustained engagement at the grassroots level remains essential. He stressed that meaningful dialogue within the community is critical to reaching a peaceful, non-violent resolution. Pinnick appealed to the people of Warri to maintain calm, and  work collectively to uphold unity over division.
