Former Delta North Senator Peter Nwaoboshi Dies at 68
Former Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi, has died at 68, leaving behind a political legacy that shaped Anioma politics and influenced national discourse over several decades.
Reacting to the news, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, said the former lawmaker’s passing was a major loss to the Anioma people, Delta State and the nation. The governor, in a condolence message, acknowledged Nwaoboshi’s years of service and his efforts toward advancing development in the Niger Delta through legislative engagement.
Nwaoboshi served in the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2023, representing Delta North Senatorial District. During this period, he chaired the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, where he was involved in oversight and advocacy aimed at tackling the region’s developmental challenges. His political journey included prominent roles within the Peoples Democratic Party before his defection to the All Progressives Congress in 2021, after which he remained active in state politics.
His career was marked by moments of controversy, including a 2022 Court of Appeal conviction on money laundering charges that sparked national debate. The ruling was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2023, clearing him of all allegations. Despite this, Nwaoboshi is remembered for his legislative contributions and enduring influence in Delta and Niger Delta politics.
