FG to Clear Backlog of Contractor Payments from Monday

The Federal Government will begin settling outstanding debts owed to indigenous contractors from Monday following an agreement brokered by the House of Representatives. The decision was reached after a tense four-hour session in Abuja between lawmakers, contractors, and top government officials.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chaired the expanded meeting, announced the resolution in a statement on Thursday. The intervention comes after weeks of protests by contractors at the Ministry of Finance over unpaid funds for capital projects executed since 2024.

Over 80 contractors attended the talks alongside Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi. The session was convened under the House Special Committee on Budget Implementation to resolve the dispute.

The settlement is expected to ease tensions and allow stalled projects to resume across the country, while also restoring confidence among local contractors in the government’s commitment to honour agreements.
