Edo PDP Condemns Suspension of 18 Council Chairmen

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it calls the “illegal suspension” of the state’s 18 local government chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly, an action reportedly carried out under the direction of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

In a statement issued by PDP chairman Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the party stated that the suspension as “unconstitutional, null, and void.” Aziegbemi further criticised the move as a “blatant disregard” for a recent ruling by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, as well as a Supreme Court decision affirming the autonomy of local governments under Nigeria’s Constitution.

The party also noted that the suspended chairmen and their deputies had not been given an opportunity to defend themselves before the suspension. The party reiterated that the Nigerian Constitution is supreme and warned that any attempts to undermine it or disregard judicial rulings pose a direct threat to democracy and the rule of law.

Aziegbemi called on the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and its members to immediately reverse their decision, in the interest of upholding democratic principles. The party has instructed the suspended chairmen and their deputies to resume their duties at their respective councils without delay.

The PDP further urged the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to investigate the actions of the Edo State Governor-elect, stating that they are a constitutional violation and a potential threat to security.
