Edo Government Bans Transport Unions Over Illegal Levies
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced a sweeping ban on revenue collection by transport unions and private firm Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, citing rampant abuse and extortion of road users. The decision, conveyed through a statement by Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, follows growing complaints about unauthorised cash collections and harassment by union members.
The banned groups include the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), ANNEWAT, and Drivers on Wheel. Government had initially granted some of these unions limited permission to assist the Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), but they reportedly violated the terms by engaging in illegal and coercive practices.
The state government views these actions as economic sabotage and a direct threat to law and order. Governor Okpebholo stressed that under his leadership, no group would be allowed to intimidate motorists or exploit traders under the guise of revenue collection. The government advised citizens not to comply with any payment demands from the banned unions.
Ikhilor urged the public to report any illegal activities to the Edo Special Taskforce, led by SP Michael Anetor, as the government works to restore sanity and transparency in the state’s revenue processes.
