DESOPADEC Launches Flood Mitigation Effort in Warri, Warns Against Blocking Drains

As part of efforts to combat seasonal flooding, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has commenced a canal desilting campaign in Warri, urging residents to stop dumping waste and constructing on drainage channels.

The initiative kicked off along Okere Road to Esisi Road on Thursday, July 24, 2025. DESOPADEC Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor, emphasized that the project, in collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Environment, is in response to flood warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

“We’re acting fast to protect lives and property. This intervention covers Warri and other key areas like Ughelli, Agbor, and Sapele,” Ochonogor said.

Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, DESOPADEC’s Executive Director of Projects, warned that human activities particularly building on water channels and improper waste disposal remain major contributors to flooding. He also called on local councils to increase enforcement against environmental violations, adding that while desilting will helps,  citizens must change their habits.
