Delta Court Jails Man for Vandalism of Newly Constructed Ubu Bridge
A High Court sitting in Asaba has sentenced a man, Emmanuel Sunday, to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to vandalising public infrastructure along the Asaba–Ughelli Expressway.
Justice Onome Marshal-Umukoro delivered the ruling, stating that the sentence would run concurrently. One year will be served in custody, while the second year will be served as community service specifically cleaning the Ogwashi-Uku Court premises.
The convict was charged with willful destruction of a government-owned drainage system and intent to steal, contrary to the Delta State Public and Private Properties Protection Law, 2018, and the Criminal Code Law of the state.
According to the state’s Attorney-General, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, the conviction reflects the state’s tough stance on vandalism. “We are determined to prosecute anyone who undermines public infrastructure. This judgment sends a strong message,” he said.
He credited the swift arrest to the prompt report by Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, who expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “This is a deterrent. Public assets are not personal property. Anyone caught will face the full force of the law,” Jamani warned.
