PDP Zones 2027 Presidency to South, Moves Convention to Ibadan
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, abandoning the open ticket approach used in 2023.
The decision was reached at the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Thursday in Abuja. The NEC also approved the relocation of its Elective National Convention from Kano to Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention is now scheduled for November 15–16, 2025.
The zoning decision is widely interpreted as a move that could bolster Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition, a development that may stir fresh tension with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who has significant influence in Kano politics.
Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, chaired the NEC meeting, where key party leaders deliberated on internal reforms, reconciliation efforts, and 2027 election strategies.
Despite recent defections to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Damagum expressed confidence in the PDP’s strength, noting that many defectors were already returning. PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara added that many former members are likely to return once the party shows decisive and credible leadership at the convention.
Also Bauchi State Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, Senator Bala Mohammed, also reaffirmed the party’s openness to reconciliation.
Party spokesperson Debo Ologunagba said the NEC was pleased with the progress of internal reconciliations, noting it reflects the members’ commitment to unity and the core values of the party.
The choice of Ibadan a Makinde stronghold has raised eyebrows within the party, with some viewing it as a strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 race.
