Delta’s First Lady Urges Parents to Stop Hiding Children With Special Needs

Parents and caregivers have been urged to end the culture of hiding children living with special needs, a practice linked to stigma and misinformation. The call was made by the wife of the Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, during a free medical outreach for special-needs children in Ughelli.

She emphasised that every child deserves visibility, care, and affection regardless of their condition, noting that many children are kept away from school and healthcare due to fear of judgment. According to her, autism and other developmental conditions require understanding, structure, and professional support not secrecy.

Medical experts at the event warned that nutritional deficiencies and delayed intervention worsen outcomes for children with developmental challenges. The outreach featured medical checks, nutrition counselling, disability support services, and mobility aids.
